How church leaders can help the families in their congregation

Rob Rienow of Visionary Family Ministries recommends that every church leader do these two things to help their families:

  • Encourage your church to develop a one- or two-page statement on a theology of family. “Your church is about the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20),” Rob says, “making disciples, equipping people, sending them out, advancing the Gospel. So, the question is, does the family have anything to do with the Great Commission? If it does, then your church needs to engage with family.”
  • Equip families for worship. “Every Wednesday an email goes out to our congregation about the upcoming Sunday. Since our worship at church overflows from our worship at home,” Rob says, “the main text of the sermon is sent out with a note, ‘Please read this as a family and talk about these three questions. And here are two links to songs we’ll be singing on Sunday. Please sing these songs in the car and at home to prepare your hearts.’ So, what we’re always doing is home first, church second, home first, church second. We want families to be in the Word and in worship first in their house and have that overflow into church rather than the other way around.”
