The "gender-fluid" generation

Transgenderism is trendy.

  • It is estimated 1.4 million Americans identify as transgender, double the number from five years ago. A recent study found that the number of gender reassignment surgeries jumped 20 percent last year, although that story has been reported in very different ways.
  • The bathroom battles continue. The federal executive order requiring that schools allow students to use the bathroom that corresponds with their chosen identity has been rescinded, leaving the matter to states and schools to decide. However, many districts have chosen to leave their policies in place, including small town schools with a reputation for being very conservative. School children across the land are still being taught not to use the pronouns “he/him” and “she/her” but instead the gender neutral terms “zi” and “zir.”
  • Popular TV science teacher Bill Nye was recently involved in a controversy over the editing of his past shows. A segment was deleted where he clearly stated that there are only two gender possibilities determined by our chromosomes. He now says gender falls on a spectrum, a position espoused by many.
  • Many large employers provide health care insurance that covers gender reassignment surgery. The main requirement for having a claim paid is that a mental health professional must confirm that you experience gender dysphoria: “discomfort about a mismatch between your biological sex and gender identity.”

This month's newsletter helps us discern how to respond Biblically to these trends.
