The Doorpost: What should be our 'normal'?

Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.
1 Corinthians 16:13

When we face turmoil all around us, we may yearn for our lives to be calmer and less uncertain. We sometimes hear people (possibly even ourselves) wistfully ask, “Will things ever get back to normal?”

By that we seem to mean that we want others to “just do the right thing” so we won’t face so many obstacles to doing what is right. We just want life to be simpler so we won’t have to be so careful. That approach may have contributed to many of the problems we have been facing. We don’t need to get back to that.

Instead, we should not drop our guard but should be watchful as we confront the challenges around us. We need to be strong, stand firm, and take action. That is the example set for us by godly people throughout Scripture, including Jesus Himself.

Our “normal” should not be wishing for something easier but living lives of active watchfulness, standing firm against evil, acting in faith.
