The Doorpost: ‘We know Him and so can you’
By Ray King · Feb 13, 2013
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. … And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1:1-3,14
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life …
1 John 1:1
In this pivotal passage, John begins by talking about “the Word.” We learn that “the Word” already existed at the beginning. “The Word” both “was with God” and “was God.” In John 1:3, we learn “the Word” was responsible for creating everything. Finally, in John 1:14, John tells us that “the Word” became a man. We are talking about Jesus Christ.
The Greek word for “the Word” is “Logos.” This was already a familiar term in Greek thought. The ancient Greeks wanted to make sense of the universe. They could see harmony and order in everything they observed. They knew there had to be some power or force behind this. They gave it the name “logos.”
It seems as if John was saying to them, “Here is what you’ve been looking for. ‘Logos’ isn’t an impersonal force, He is a personal God Who has been there from the beginning and who created everything. And the best news of all is He has come here as a man! We have seen Him! We have touched Him! We know Him and so can you.”
The Greek philosophers were trying to find “logos.” But the answers to the questions of life can only be found in the One who is “Logos,” Jesus Christ. He is the only answer to the deepest needs of we human beings and He has given us the responsibility to take this message to the whole world, starting with the people around us.
