“There’s within my heart a melody Jesus whispers sweet and low …”*

Singing to one another and to the Lord is closely connected to being filled with the Spirit. Our singing, and the singing of those around us, affects us more deeply than words alone, in ways that we cannot fully explain.

We are told to be filled with the Spirit. We are also told to address one another with all kinds of spiritual music, and to sing and make melody to the Lord with our hearts. These are not mere suggestions. Our singing to one another and our melody in our hearts to the Lord are not only only evidences of being filled with the Spirit, but are also essential to His filling.

“Jesus, Jesus, Jesus. Sweetest Name I know. Fills my every longing. Keeps me singing as I go.”*

* From an early 20th century hymn by Luther B. Bridgers, written after the tragic death of his wife and three sons in a fire.
