The Doorpost: God can do more than we can ask (Ephesians 3:20-21)

Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
Ephesians 3:20-21

God is able to do more than we ask—not two times more, not 10 times more, not 100 times more—immeasurably more. He is able to do immeasurably more than we can even imagine. He does this by His power that is at work within us—the power that raised Jesus from the dead and seated Him at His right hand far above all rule and authority, power and dominion and every title that can be given … (Ephesians 1:20-21) There is no power that is greater than the power of God that is working in us.

It is remarkable to realize that Paul wrote this when he was in prison. Do you think he prayed that he would be released from prison and then wondered why God didn’t seem to be answering his prayer? If we were in the same situation, would we be writing a letter proclaiming God’s power the way Paul did in the verses above? He could have decided that he couldn’t minister while in prison. Instead he prayed and found a way to continue the ministry God had called him to.

While Paul sat in prison, he wrote this letter to the Ephesians. Do you think he asked, or even imagined, that the words he was writing would still be ministering to believers almost 2,000 years later?

God has a plan in operation. Each of us has a part, yet none of us is able to see the whole picture. When we face the challenges of life, both large and small, we need to prayerfully continue obeying Him in faith, carrying out the ministry he has given each of us. When we do this we can have confidence that He is using our lives to do something that is more—immeasurably more—than we can ask or even imagine.
