The Doorpost: Do we delight in God’s Law?
By Ray King · Jan 22, 2014
Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.
Psalm 37:4
Delighting in the Lord does not come naturally. Our human nature tends to view God in much the same way that we might view a traffic cop. The traffic laws seem limiting. We obey them to avoid getting a ticket, but we may often wish we didn’t have to. Perhaps we may even violate them if we think we can “get away with it.”
It is easy for us to have a similar attitude toward God and His Law. Instead of rejoicing in His commands, we may resent or even resist them. Instead of wholeheartedly obeying, we may try to see how little we can get away with doing, obeying only because we fear the consequences of disobedience. We may find ourselves envying people we see disobeying God and apparently enjoying it or not seeming to suffer any consequences.
What would it be like to drive if there were no laws to provide order for everyone’s driving? What would it be like to live in a world where we didn’t have God’s Law to restrain wrongdoing by ourselves and others?
We can delight in the commands God has given us. They are for our own good and the good of others. We can delight in the loving God Who has given His commands to us.
“Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.”
