The Doorpost: Christians should be the best thinkers
By Ray King · Jan 23, 2013
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind.
Luke 10:27
Jesus gives this command three times in the New Testament—in Matthew 22:37, Mark 12:30 and Luke 10:27. It may be that He gave the commandment on more than one occasion, because the circumstances recorded in the three accounts vary somewhat and the exact wording is different each time. But all three times we are told to love the Lord our God with all our mind. I have a sense that somehow we have not taken this part of the commandment as seriously as we should. We do we consider to be the great thinkers of our culture? Do we think of Christians or of unbelievers? Shouldn’t Christians be the best thinkers in any culture and always be challenging any false beliefs that are being practiced?
Why should we be intimidated by the wisdom of the world? It is foolishness compared to God’s wisdom. We have the mind of Christ. He has renewed our minds and given us His Holy Spirit.
Throughout God’s Word, we read of men and women of faith who have confidently trusted that God’s ideas are more than adequate to deal with any situation. Their opponents were not able to stand up to the power of their arguments.
We need to “always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks us the reason for the hope that is in us,” in all these areas (1 Peter 3:15).
