The Doorpost: Be concerned if things are easy
By Ray King · Nov 04, 2014
"My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by Him. For the Lord disciplines the one He loves, and chastises every son whom He receives."
Hebrews 12:5b-6
It is natural for us to desire comfort and ease. When we experience difficulty and hardship, our reaction may be to try to escape or to wonder if God is angry with us. But the reality is that our problems are an indication of His love for us.
Jesus said that we will have tribulation in this world (John 16:33). The Apostle Paul said we rejoice in our sufferings because of the good they produce in and through us (Romans 5:3-5). James tells us to count it all joy when we meet trials, because they help complete and perfect us (James 1:2-4).
Difficulties are discipline from our loving Father and are for our good. We should not be weary of them, but should be thankful. We should be more concerned if everything is easy (Hebrews 12:8).
