The Doorpost: As believers, we face spiritual battles

For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom He receives ... If you are left without discipline, in which you have all participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.
Hebrews 12:6, 8
When life is painful, or even just inconvenient, we tend to look for ways of escape. We don’t want things to be that way. The verses above say we have it backwards.
When we are seeking to be obedient disciples of Jesus Christ, we are in a spiritual battle. We face obstacles and come under attack. We need to respond in faith. If we try to avoid them, we will not be able to be the persons He wants us to be and accomplish the work He has for us to do.
The Lord uses difficulties and hardships to discipline us in love, just as He did Jesus. They are something good that show we are His true sons and are doing things the enemies of God oppose. If life is easy, we should be concerned.
