The December Doorpost

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.
Lamentations 3:22-23

When we consider the verses that precede it, the passage above is astounding. In Lamentations 3: 1-20, there is not one thing mentioned that would give hope.

“He (God) has driven me into darkness without any light (3)…He has made my flesh and my skin waste away (4)…though I call and cry for help, He shuts out my prayer (8)…I have become the laughingstock of all peoples (14)…He has filled me with bitterness (15)…my soul is bereft of peace; I have forgotten what happiness is (17); so I say ‘My endurance has perished; so has my hope from the Lord (18).’” Take some time to read more of verses 1-20.

Then read verses 21-33. The same writer says, “The Lord is good to those who wait for Him (25)…the Lord will not cast off forever (31).” In the worst of circumstances he writes, “But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” This I call to mind.
