The Creator of the universe came to serve; who can we serve today?

“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
Mark 10:45
As we explore the Gospels, we see a lot of focus on what Jesus did and what He taught, but we also learn about how He described Himself. “Son of Man” was His favorite way to refer to Himself, used about 80 times.
“Son of Man” is an intentional claim of deity, directly invoking the exalted, heavenly figure in Daniel 7:13-14. By saying that the Son of Man came to serve, Jesus is making the astonishing claim that the Almighty God is present in the form of a servant.
But in Mark 10:45, Jesus states clearly that His purpose for coming was to be a servant. It’s hard to think of a term more out of step with society today than the word “servant.” It sounds archaic and demeaning.
However, Jesus stepped down from glory into this world to serve. To be a servant means intentionally looking to the needs of others and making it a priority to do what is in their best interest.
It’s natural to want to be served, but it’s a demonstration of Christ’s power at work in us when we find joy in serving others. Ask God to overflow your heart with His love and compassion. Then ask, “Who can I serve today?”
