Samaritan met Gunn family’s needs

Colin Gunn not only learned a lot about filmmaking through the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival. He also learned about Samaritan Ministries there, and discovered it met his family’s health care needs.

“Being an independent Christian film producer, there’s lot of financial peaks and troughs,” he says. “You’re self-employed, as well, so there’s not the stability of an employer providing health coverage.”

Health care sharing was a natural fit for Colin and Emily, who homeschool their eight children.

“We’re doing what we’ve seen done in the homeschooling movement,” he says. “We’re taking the responsibility for our own health. The vision that Samaritan Ministries has for health care is similar to our vision for education: We believe that the government shouldn’t be the provider of health care.”

The Gunns aren’t too crazy about health insurance carriers, either.

“One of the negatives is cost, but there also are other issues in being unequally yoked with unbelievers,” Colin says. “We see that Samaritan Ministries would be the only possible solution for us to get health care. But mainly we believe fully in the philosophy of the ministry, that really health care shouldn’t be in the hands of the government, it should be in the hands of individuals as we help each other. We’re following the Biblical principle of the Good Samaritan, where we voluntarily help each other in the Christian community.”

Colin may share his views on health care issues in a future film he’s considering, one which would possibly include Samaritan Ministries. He has seen totally socialized health care in action in Scotland, where he grew up.

“I’m very aware of the negative aspects of that,” he says. “We need to show the antithesis between what independent care would be and what government care would inevitably be, which would be the introduction of more abortion, eugenics, euthanasia … the things that we’re always having to fight against.

“I like the fact that Samaritan Ministries stands as an antithesis and is also proof that people outside of government can thrive and do very well and have their needs taken care of, and also gain the knowledge that those who are helping them with their needs are praying for them and are part of the Christian community.”

Colin says that a film on health care would be as important for the Christian community as their film on public education, IndoctriNation, was.

“We inevitably have to deal with the issue of health care in our own families, and there’s a good Christian way to do it that the majority of people still don’t do. Also, we need the ones who are involved in it to tell them what to do.

“With a film on health care, we hope to persuade many more people not only to get off the government system but also to consider using Samaritan Ministries.”

Colin and Emily are glad they haven’t had to share many needs other than the “babies coming along every year.”

“Having it there is a peace of mind for us,” Colin says.

As their midwife situation has changed, he says, they’ve had to go to a hospital for births instead of staying at home.

“We realize the huge benefit of having Samaritan there.”
