The family of Samaritan Board of Directors member Kevin Holst and his wife, Jessica, are being honored at the 2017 Iowa State Fair “for their hard work and love of farming.”

The Holsts, who run Yellow Barn Farms in Eldridge, Iowa, will be one of six families to receive The Way We Live Award.

From the Quad-City Times:

The Holst family started farming in Iowa in 1889. An ancestor immigrated from Germany in 1852 and worked as a stone mason to save money to buy the farm in Scott County. He purchased some of the land where the Holst family now lives and farms.

The Holsts and their six children raise corn, soybeans, hay and Gelbvieh cattle. They also sell bulls to breeders, locally raised beef, eggs and fiber from their two Angora goats.

Kevin was in 4-H as a child, continued with FFA as a teen and most recently has served three terms with the Farm Service Agency, and board of directors of Samaritan Ministries. Jessica keeps a blog outlining their daily life, keeping readers informed about the busy days of a large homeschooling family living on an Iowa farm.
