4 mother-daughter devotionals for Mother's Day gifts

One way to celebrate Mother’s Day this month is to get the mom in your life a devotional she can work through with the daughter in her life.

There are several to choose from, including

Between Us Girls

Trish Donohue, author of Between Us Girls, said parent-child devotionals are important connections.

“We need to be really proactive in our communication because they are hearing voices from every direction,” she said in a recent interview. “There are people online and all kinds of sources telling them how to look at life, how to view themselves, what things mean, how to do relationships. On top of that, of course, are friends and schools, and all kinds of other outside influences—some good, some not as good.

“As parents, we are the people that God has chosen to disciple our children, and it probably isn’t going to happen without being purposeful.”

Between Us Girls includes topics like “Our Conversations,” “Our Weaknesses,” “Our Role Models” and “Our Design.”

“It was a great opportunity to get into some of these issues with my daughters in an age-appropriate way,” Trish said. “It gave me a vision to share with other moms these techniques of looking at the Bible together but also asking our daughters questions and sharing with them personal experiences from our own lives that are appropriate to share. Not just expecting something of them but giving something as well. It ended up being a really sweet time.”

Trish said her book is best suited for mothers with daughters in the 7- to 14-year-old age range, “depending on the maturity of your daughter.”

It also offers moms the opportunity to be real for their children.

“We have an opportunity to be an example of vulnerability and humility and openness to our children,” she said. “It’s really powerful when we can share with them, ‘Here’s how I struggle in that area’ or ‘Here’s something that God really revealed to me in this area,’ or ‘Let me tell you a story about when I felt that way.’”

The format for Between Us Girls combines devotional content, Bible passages, and prompts and questions for discussion. It includes 26 chapters and has a 4.7-star rating on Amazon.

Trish is also the author of You Are Welcomed: Devotions for When Life Is a Lot (New Growth, 2023).

Girl to Girl and Heart to Heart

Girl to Girl: 60 Mother-Daughter Devotions for a Closer Relationship and Deeper Faith was written by Stacy Pardoe and her daughter, Bekah. The book is described as written for moms and their daughters ages 7-12, with 60 devotions including Scripture, conversation starters, and a shared section for journaling at the end of each chapter.

“Bekah and I each wrote a portion of every daily reading, and young girls love connecting with a girl their age!” Stacey wrote on her website.

The Pardoes followed that book, which has a 4.8 rating on Amazon, with Heart to Heart: A Mother-Daughter Devotional with 50 Devotions for Teen Girls, which has scored a 5-star rating. The latter is geared toward moms and their girls ages 13-19. The description says it can be “also be used for young women navigating their twenties, as it focuses on finding direction from God, making important life decisions, and many issues relevant to 20-somethings.”

Between Us

Vicki Courtney wrote 52 devotions for Between Us: A 52-Week Keepsake Devotional for Daughters and Moms.

According to its Amazon description, “Each devotion unpacks a focus Scripture and offers guidance and biblical truth that is relevant to today's tweens.
