Loving and serving the Lord blesses Him

Of David. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! (Psalms 103:1)

The other day my son and I heard a song on the radio based on this verse. He asked if the idea of blessing the LORD was Biblical. I responded “Yes, it is, but I don’t know what it means to bless the LORD.” What can we do to bless the self-existent and eternal One? He lacks nothing that we can supply. So, what does this mean?

The word “bless” means to bend the knee or kneel as in adoration. “Bending the knee” to someone expresses allegiance, submission, reverence, and respect. The LORD is our Creator and King. It is He Who has provided salvation for us. It is He Who meets our physical needs as well. It should be our joy to bless the LORD. It should flow out of our fervent and devoted love for Him. Our entire being, body and spirit, must worship Him.

Brothers and sisters, let’s fix our heart, soul, and mind on loving and serving Him as we should. This blesses the LORD.
