In prayer: What’s really true?
By Mike Miller · Jul 18, 2012
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
Philippians 4:8
Many are confused about what is really true. Some say truth can’t be known. In John 18:38, when questioning Jesus, Pontius Pilate asked, “What is truth?” Confusion and conflicting messages are everywhere, but we as Christians can know what is true.
Pilate asked his question about truth because of what Jesus had just said to him. Pilate had asked, “So, You are a king?” Jesus replied, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice.” We see that Jesus’ very purpose is to be a witness to the truth. But not only is He a witness to the truth—He is the Truth (John 14:6).
When Paul tells us to think about what is true, we should direct our thoughts to Him Who came as a witness to the truth, Who speaks the truth, and Who is The Truth—Jesus Christ. Only through Him will our thoughts be conformed to reality. As our thoughts are conformed to what is true, we will pray with confidence and understanding because we know the Truth (1 John 5:20).
