In Prayer: What is a godly life?
By Samaritan staff · Sep 12, 2012
First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, Who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and there is one Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, Who gave Himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.
I Timothy 2:1-6
Over the past couple of months, we’ve seen that Paul instructed Timothy to “first of all” pray for all people. He told Timothy to pray in particular for those in authority so “that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life,” and then he adds that our life should be “godly and dignified in every way.”
A godly life is a life devoted to God. A person puts his faith into practice and does what God requires of him. Living a life of dignity means fulfilling our duties to our fellow man. A “godly and dignified” life brings together the two greatest commandments: Love God—Love your neighbor. Pray for everyone. “This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior.”
