In Prayer: Remember why Jesus came in the flesh

By Samaritan staff  ·  Dec 05, 2012

Therefore He had to be made like His brothers in every respect, so that He might become a merciful and faithful High Priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For because He Himself has suffered when tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted.
Hebrews 2:17-18

The Christmas season is a great time to meditate on the wonders of Jesus Christ, God the Son, becoming man. How wonderful to know that the God Who spoke the Universe into existence would humble Himself to become a man like us. Ordinary flesh and blood. Subject to the same temptations. Just like us. Does this amaze you? Do you ask yourself, “Why?”

Hebrews 2 reveals several reasons why Jesus Christ came in the flesh. Here are three. First, Jesus became a trustworthy and compassionate High Priest. Because He was made like us in every respect, He, too, suffered through temptations, and He is willing and able to aid us in our time of testing. Second, Jesus was made like us, so He could reconcile His brothers (us) to God through His blood that was shed for our sins (Romans 5). Third, Jesus set us free. We were held captive by the devil in sin and bondage, but through His own death, Jesus rendered the devil powerless and released us from slavery.

Christmas is a celebration of the incarnation of Jesus Christ. As we worship Him in freedom this Christmas season, let’s remember Who He is and why He came in the flesh.
