In Prayer: King David’s prayer for his son

By Mike Miller  ·  Oct 18, 2012

Of Solomon. Give the king Your justice, O God, and Your righteousness to the royal son! May he judge Your people with righteousness, and Your poor with justice! Let the mountains bear prosperity for the people, and the hills, in righteousness! May he defend the cause of the poor of the people, give deliverance to the children of the needy, and crush the oppressor!
Psalm 72:1-4

David prays that Solomon would defend the cause of the poor. The poor, in this context, is not limited to those who live in a state of financial poverty, but to those who are afflicted and suffering from oppression. He is to help those who are being subjugated or exploited by others. A just ruler protects the prosperous and the poor alike. He frees them from the power of the oppressor and gives them deliverance. We should ask God to bless our leaders with wisdom to provide His justice for all of the afflicted.
