In Prayer: Genuine fellowship with God

By Mike Miller  ·  Apr 18, 2012

If we say we have fellowship with Him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His Word is not in us.
1 John 1:6-10

Do we have genuine fellowship with God? John tells us how to know.

God is light, and there is no darkness in Him. We cannot be in fellowship with Him when we are walking in the darkness. If we have areas of continued disobedience to God’s Word in our lives, yet say or pretend that we are walking in fellowship with Him, we lie and do not practice the truth. It doesn’t matter how many people we are able to fool.

If we deny our sin, we are fooling ourselves. If we claim that we have never sinned or that our unbiblical actions really aren’t sin, we are saying that God’s Word is false—calling God a liar. But when we bring our disobedience to God, agreeing with what He says in His Word about our sin, the blood of Jesus cleanses us.

We can only have fellowship with God when we are walking with Him in the light, agreeing with His Word concerning our sins, and receiving His forgiveness and cleansing.
