Humble blueberry offers wild taste, health benefits
By Michael Miller · Jul 13, 2026
You’ve got to love how well God takes care of us.
Even with blueberries.
While as Christians we can look forward to physical renewal in the new heaven and new earth (1 Corinthians 15:42-44), as fallen creatures in this fallen world, our bodies suffer. But the Lord has put foods like a humble little bluish berry that grows wild on the earth to help us not only undo some of that suffering but enjoy ourselves in the process (Matthew 6:26). (Did somebody mention blueberry pie?)
How blueberries help our bodies
Healthline.com says that blueberries may be helpful to our bodies in these ways:
- They’re low in calories but high in nutrients.
- They’re loaded with antioxidants, which can help stave off diseases like cancer and the effects of aging.
- They may lower blood pressure by improving blood flow and blood vessel dilation.
- They can help with brain function and improve memory, if I remember correctly.
- Anthocyanins, which contribute to the blueberry’s purple pigmentation, may work against diabetes, whether fresh or freeze-dried.
- They may reduce muscle damage after strenuous exercise.
Buying or growing blueberries
You can grow your own blueberries (not an easy feat, in my experience) or buy them. Getting them fresh is going to vary by region. When you buy them at the store, “Look for firm berries with a natural bloom—a fine white powdery coating indicating freshness,” says Fresh Carton.
After you bring them home, refrigerate them, but don’t wash them until you’re ready to use them. You can even freeze them in single layers before putting them in airtight containers. And dehydration is always an option.
Great by themselves or in recipes
Eating blueberries fresh by themselves is always a good idea, but the fruit is so versatile you’ll need to try them in other ways, too. You can
- use them in pies, muffins, and pancakes
- make sauces and jams out of them
- use them in smoothies
- include them in salads
Here are some unique recipes for you to try (including some gluten-free and dairy-free options!):
