God’s crazy math
By Mike Miller · Jan 05, 2011
God doesn’t do things like we would expect Him to do things or like we would do them.
I’ve been learning that this week while writing an upcoming Member Spotlight on the Rev. Brian Kluth of Maximum Generosity, a ministry that promotes, well, generosity in giving to God’s work. For instance, Brian said that when he ministers to Christian who are in heavy debt, he encourages them to begin giving generously to the church and other ministries. That doesn’t make human sense. I’m in debt up to my nostrils and you want me to start spending more? It is, as Brian said, “God’s crazy math.” He honors generosity toward His work by giving us wisdom and guidance in our handling of money, says Brian, who has written one a wildly popular devotional on giving and has a new book, Experiencing God as Our Provider, now in print.
Likewise a blog post I came across this morning about “anointed stutterer” Herbert Brown. On the Christian Communicators’ Worldwide Web site, Steve Burchett shared the story of evangelist James Alexander Stewart asking God for a “praying evangelist” partner for his minister. The Father sent Herbert Brown and his profound stuttering problem, which Stewart had trouble accepting. However, it soon became clear that this was indeed “God’s crazy math” for Stewart and Brown, and it found success.
Let’s all be open to “God’s crazy math” as we go through the day. I know I have to be better in this area and more open to the Lord working in weird but profoundly effective ways.
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD” (Isaiah 55:8).
