3 devotionals for dads and lads make good Father's Day gifts

Being a good father means having good connections with your children, and the best kind of connection is through faith. Here are a few books that dads can use to have devotions with their sons of a variety of ages.

Called to Greatness

Called to Greatness: 31 Devotions to Ignite the Faith of Fathers & Sons (2015, Broadstreet Publishing Group LLC) by Dan Britton and Jimmy Page is offered in the form of a 31-day challenge, but can be adapted as needed, such as using it weekly.

Each devotional features

  • a Called to Greatness Principle
  • a quotation
  • a devotional text
  • action steps
  • a concluding prayer

Devotional topics include “Eye-Popping Grace,” “Everybody’s Doing It,” and “Warrior Mind-Set.” Scripture is sprinkled throughout the devotions.

The book is pleasing physically, too, with a sturdy cover and high-quality paper and layout. “Called to Greatness” would work best with junior high and older sons.

Between Us Guys

Between Us Guys: Life-Changing Conversations for Dads and Sons (2019, New Growth Press) by Joel Fitzpatrick is suitable for junior high school-age boys and their dads. The book, which features 14 conversation starters, covers topics ranging from friends to failure to sex to heaven. Helpful appendices discuss sharing the Gospel with a son and leading family worship.

Daddy and Me

Daddy and Me: 100 Devotions to Share (2021, Lifeway) by Alyssa Jones is written for dads with boys ages 2 to 6. The devotions are short but help fathers to start modeling the importance of devotional time.

The devotions are broken into 10 themes like “Who Is God?”, “Who Is Jesus?”, “The Bible,” “Wisdom,” and “Family and Friends.” There’s also a section called “Big Bible Words for Me.”

Each devotional contains a Scripture passage, short thought, and prayer to share with your child, as well as a “Thoughts for Daddy” section. The back includes a place to record special “Daddy and me” moments as well.
