We should allow ourselves to be vessels through which God's joy flows

For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you.

Philemon 7

Philemon is one of Paul’s shortest letters, yet it’s a beautiful example of pastoral encouragement and gospel relationships. Its brevity makes it easy to overlook, but there is rich truth tucked within these verses.

The language of Scripture should call us to evaluate our priorities and values on a regular basis. At first glance, we may conclude after reading Philemon 7, “I don’t talk like that!” If that is our response, then, why don’t we? Perhaps we should!

The Apostle Paul, the intellectual scholar and debater, the rugged missionary and world traveler, used these fond words in his appeal to Philemon: “… the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you.” I’d say that is high praise coming from the pen of Paul. And, though it wasn’t the purpose of this letter, I think Paul would say that he was describing the normal Christian life when commending Philemon.

Let’s stay in step with the Spirit and be surrendered, joyful vessels for the grace of God to flow through. May our love and service be the aroma of Christ to those around us. And because of that, may there be much refreshment in the Body of Christ and beyond.

To God be the glory!
