Book review: 'Dirty Genes' by Dr. Ben Lynch

How fascinating to live in a period where science has discovered the world of genetics.
Dirty Genes by Dr. Ben Lynch is a remarkable book that describes how genetics, and especially epigenetics, plays a key role in our health.
Although genetics in the form of DNA is something we are born with and cannot change, epigenetics is another marvel altogether. Dr. Lynch describes epigenetics as “the science of understanding how your genes are expressed and how you can use diet, supplements, environment, and lifestyle to shape your genetic destiny.”
While experts indicate we have over 20,000 genes in our body, according to the author, there are seven that affect our health: MTHFR, COMT, DAO, MAOA, GST/GPX, NOS3, and PEMT.
Although steps we take to adjust our environment cannot change our genes, some changes are instrumental in turning certain genes “on” and “off.” Each of these genes plays a role in health maintenance. According to Dr. Lynch, these genes are either born “dirty” or can easily become “dirty” through diet, lifestyle, and environment.
Throughout the book, Dr. Lynch shows how these genes can be meticulously scrutinized to pinpoint the specific symptoms a person may be experiencing. He then helps the reader develop a plan to alleviate them. Checklists throughout the book narrow down indicators for health challenges. Suggested steps to “clean up” dirty genes follow.
Dr. Lynch has helped thousands of clients and has trained many physicians and health professionals with his keen insight of epigenetics. Just because your close relative died of cancer or heart disease does not mean you will suffer the same fate.
Dirty Genes is a captivating read, taking you into the world of genes and epigenetics.
