Abortion advocates see Zika virus as opportunity

“For whoever finds me finds life and obtains favor from the Lord, but he who fails to find me injures himself; all who hate me love death.”—Proverbs 8:35-36

Abortion advocates are seizing on weak links between the Zika virus and birth defects in Brazil to encourage pregnant women to abort their babies if they are diagnosed with the disease.

The World Health Organization has declared the spread of the virus, transmitted by the Aeades mosquito, to be a public health emergency. Zika has spread to 29 countries.

Inconclusive links are being made between the virus and a spike in microcephaly, a condition that causes babies to be born with brain abnormalities and small heads, in a region of Brazil.

The possibility of the link has led some Central American and South American nations to encourage women there to hold off on getting pregnant for up to two years while the virus runs its course. Others have emphasized prevention by taking action against the mosquito or, simply, using insect repellant and appropriate clothing. The WHO advised doctors to monitor fetal development and maternal health closely.

But, World magazine reports, abortion advocates see the situation as an opportunity to get the nations to loosen their strict abortion laws.

Tewodros Melesse, director general of the International Planned Parenthood Federation, said the response to Zika should include “strengthening family planning programs and access to safe abortion services.” Abortion advocates also have targeted other South American countries for their abortion restrictions. Of the South American countries currently reporting Zika cases, only Guyana and French Guiana have completely legalized abortion.

The pro-abortion group Women on Waves has even offered to give Brazilian women free online consultations if they are less than nine weeks pregnant and to send them abortion pills if a Zika diagnosis is confirmed. But microcephaly is usually not detected until the third trimester. What this group is saying is that if you have the Zika virus, there is an outside chance something could be wrong with your baby (maybe), so we’ll help you abort it even though you wouldn’t know about problems for months. And we’ll do it with abortion pills, which are known to harm women.

It’s a sad sign of the aggression of pro-abortion organizations that they will seize on questionable statistics and studies in order to promote the murder of children.

Then again, we’re talking about a movement that gets upset over a Doritos commercial because it “humanized” the fetus.
