The Doorpost: Jesus deeply desires to give rest to those who come to Him

“Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls, For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light."

Matthew 11:28-30

Ever since the first sin in the Garden of Eden, mankind has lived under heavy burdens. Because Jesus is gentle and lowly, He has patiently offered relief and rest to all who realize their helplessness and come to Him.

Despite the kind invitation that Jesus makes, many people just continue their labor and do not have their burdens lifted by Him. They may doubt His gentleness and lowliness, or their need for His help, or taking on His yoke. Who are the ones who receive the rest for their souls that He offers? Those who believe that He is gentle and lowly and come to Him.

How much does Jesus desire to lift our burdens? Enough to leave heaven for us and become a man. Enough to suffer and die for us, bearing scars for all eternity. Psalm 103 says it’s like the compassion a father has for his children.

He longs for us to come to Him so we can receive the rest for our souls that only He can give.
