Fake news? Watch out for fake love!

Let love be genuine.

Romans 12:9a

Let love be genuine. We can read these words, but not take time to realize what they mean.

We frequently hear talk about “fake” news. This verse warns us against fake love. Some translations of the verse say, ”Let love be without hypocrisy.” When we pretend to love someone but are not happy when good happens to them or are even secretly happy when bad happens to them, our love is hypocritical.

Proverbs 24:17-18 says, “Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and let not your heart be glad when he stumbles, lest the Lord see it and be displeased.’’ We may be able to fool others, but we will never fool God.

The rest of Romans 12 names more than 20 indications of genuine love—abhorring evil, holding fast to what is good, having brotherly affection, showing extreme honor to one another, living in harmony, fervently serving the Lord in the power of the Spirit, being constant in prayer, refusing to pay back evil for evil, sharing in others’ joys and sorrows, associating with the lowly, having humility, doing good to enemies, and much more.

Only if our love is genuine will we have the endurance to overcome evil with good. Fake love may fool others and even produce short-term gain, but it has no eternal value.
